“It came without ribbons, it came without tags, it came without packages, boxes, or bags; maybe Christmas doesn’t come from a store, maybe Christmas, perhaps… means a little bit more.” This quote from 1966 by beloved Christmas character, The Grinch resembled the true meaning of the holiday season. People have since become more wrapped up in the shopping and deals as opposed to the simple things that make the holiday season so special. One of the most classic thanksgiving traditions is the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade. Around 3 million line up on the busy New York City streets and about 44 million people tune in on their living room televisions. This tradition started in 1924 and with it came the unofficial holiday of Black Friday. The holiday gets its name from the idea of stores going from the red zone straight to the black zone representing going from low profit to high profit. In 2017 Black Friday sales went up almost 18% in profit. Last year around 2.87 billion dollars were spent on black Friday and Thanksgiving Day sales almost doubled that with 5.03 billion dollars. Big brand stores like Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, Steve Madden and many more participate in sales, so shove down your turkey and potatoes and shop till you drop.
