Anime Recommendations

Anime is making a comeback this year and the people who made fun of the fans are now fans themselves. Granted, most are using it as an aesthetic because a lot of people like it now. This has led to heavy gatekeeping on whether or not people are ‘real anime fans’ or only like it because it’s trendy. Since newcomers have started watching, most ask for recommendations. The following includes three anime you should definitely try if you want to get into new fandoms.

First up we have My Hero Academia. Known in the fandom as BNHA, the plot begins futuristically in a world where 80 percent of the population has a superpower, or as they call it ‘quirk’. With the reasoning for getting these quirks unknown, when children started being born with them, the crime rate increased and people had to step in. Comic books became reality and the society now included heroes and villains. The main character is a boy named Izuku Midoriya. His whole life he had dreamed of becoming a hero. But unlike his classmates, when all their quirks manifested, he didn’t get one. This caused him to get bullied, and the biggest one was his childhood friend, Bakugou. Ever since Izuku was a kid, his idol was All Might, the number one ranked hero and the symbol of peace. He dreamed of being just like him his entire life. When Izuku took off to save Bakugou from a villain, even though he had no power to stop it, All Might saw his bravery and decided to pass his quirk to young Midoriya. Now enrolling in the top hero school, UA High, Izuku must try and control his new quirk and become the number one hero.

Next is a classic, Ouran Highschool Host Club. It’s the first anime I ever watched and I highly recommend it to beginner watchers. An honor student, Haruhi Fujioka, made it into a top academy for the richest of rich students with her grades. She had to cut her hair off from a bubblegum accident, and it led the students to believe she was a boy. The first day of school, she broke a vase a club was going to auction and she had to join the host club in order to pay for it. “The Ouran Host Club is where the school’s handsomest boys, with too much time on their hands, entertain young ladies who also have way too much time on their hands.” Haruhi must learn how to be a proper gentleman in order to repay her debt of eight million yen towards the club whilst pretending to be a boy. The members of the club take her on adventures and keep her on her toes. They are surprised by her ‘commoner lifestyle’ and learn how people who aren’t rich live. Although the anime only has one season, the manga continues the story much further than the 26 episodes on Netflix.

The last anime I am going to recommend is called Hunter x Hunter. It takes place in a land of hunters, which are people who travel the world doing dangerous tasks and searching for treasure. Gon Freecss, a twelve year old boy, is leaving home to go take the hunters exam so he can be a professional hunter like his father, Ging. He left when Gon was born and now he wants to travel the world to find him. Along the way, he meets 17 year old Kurapika and 19 year old Leorio. They all set off together to take the hunters exam where they have to face challenges and opponents in order to just get there. They make their way to the destination of the exam where they face six stages of difficulty. In order to pass, they must push themselves to their limits. Very few people pass the exam, some have been retaking the test for years and never managing to get their hunters license. When they arrive at stage one of the exam, Gon finds the only other applicant his age. Ex assassin Killua Zoldyck and Gon become fast friends and stick together. The plot thickens as the backstories of the characters are revealed and quickly takes a turn you wouldn’t expect.

There are several other major anime such as Attack on Titan, Naruto, Seven Deadly Sins, Haikyuu, Maid Sama, ect. But for new watchers, the three I recommended are a good place to start. Anime has all different genres, so there’s bound to be some out there that catch your interest. If you are interested, those are suggestions that I hope you enjoy.
