Detroit Gets New Area Code
A street in downtown Detroit leading to Comerica Park.
The iconic 313 Detroit area code could be changing in the near future in order to make room for new phone numbers.
Michigan Public Service Commission announced on January 19th, 2023 that the Detroit area will run out of new phone numbers by 2025. They announced that the code will be changed to 679, and is predicted to be implemented in the 3rd quarter of 2025.
If you reside in Hamtramck, Allen Park, Highland Park, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Ecorse, Grosse Pointes, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Redford Township, River Rouge, and Taylor, this change will affect you.
The new area code will not affect anyone with a current 313 phone number, but anyone who gets a new phone or number will have the new 679 code.
Although no changes will be made towards current customer bills, it will require phone users to include area codes for local calls; which sparked some controversies. The MPSC set a public hearing for March 9th in order to receive public opinion on the subject.
The hearing is set to be at Wayne County Community College District, Frank Hayden Community Room number 236 at 1:30-3:00p.m. Anyone who would like to have their opinions heard is welcome to attend.
