It is nearing the end of a very special month that is attributed to recognizing the history of 50.5% of the Earth’s population. That’s right, it’s Women’s History Month. It is a month of celebrating the female trailblazers of past generations. They have made it possible for many women to have equal opportunities to their male counterparts today. 

I have decided to celebrate by asking some people questions that hopefully got them thinking about differences that women faced back then and now. 

Interviewee: Brian Mei 

“Do you know what month it is?”

 “Women’s History Month.”

“What is feminism?” 

“The equal rights of men and women.”

“True or false, women are paid the same amount as men for the same job?” 

“False.”

“True or false women couldn’t get credit cards on their own until 1974?”

“True.”

“Who lives longer, men or women?”

 “Women live longer because men are less likely to see a doctor.”

“What is this?” (holds up object) 

“This is a tampon. Looks like a tampon.”

“How long does one (tampon) last”

“24 hours.”

“What is celebrated during the month of March?” 

“Shoot uh, March is St. Patrick’s Day maybe?”

“What year were women given the right to vote?”

“Uh, 1910.”

“True or false, women couldn’t get credit cards on their own until 1974.” 

 “Hm, I would say, that’s amazing, but I think that’s true. When my mom was born she couldn’t get her own credit card.”

“Do you know why women live longer than men?” 

“Uh, well historically it might be because they stayed at home and sort of did like the ‘raise the kids’ type things from back in the day. Maybe they did less manual type labor things back in the day, they weren’t going to war.”

“Name a woman that you look up to.”

“Zendaya.”

“What is something you love about being a woman?”

“I can create a whole human in my uterus and still bounce back and be completely fine to do a job and all of that fun stuff afterwards.”

“Have you ever faced adversity because you are a woman?”

“Yeah, I’m in a construction class and I have one other girl in it. Primarily the work field is still male-dominated for sure.”

Feminism is about all genders having equal rights and opportunities.

White women gained the right to vote in 1920 and women of color gained the right to vote in 1965.

How long does one tampon last?

It will last a maximum eight hours before risking toxic shock syndrome.

Who lives longer, men or women?

According to the Population Reference Bureau, women live longer than men because they have stronger immune systems.
