Closing of 3Ds and WiiU Eshops

Closing of 3Ds and WiiU Eshops

As of March 28th, 2023, the WiiU and 3Ds eShops are officially closing down. This means that users will no longer have access to the digital storefronts on these Nintendo consoles, which offered a variety of games, DLC, and other downloadable content. Nintendo announced the closure of both Eshops in a statement posted on their website in 2020. According to the statement, users will no longer be able to purchase digital content or redeem codes for WiiU or 3Ds systems after the closure date. However, users will still be able to re-download previously purchased content after the Eshops have closed, including any games, DLC, or other content that was bought by users prior to March 28th, 2023.

The shutdown of the Eshops on the WiiU and 3Ds consoles marks the end of an era for Nintendo’s digital marketplace. In recent years, the company has shifted its focus toward its newer console, the Nintendo Switch, which has its own Eshop that will continue to operate. Despite the closure of the WiiU and 3Ds Eshops, Nintendo has indicated that it remains committed to providing support for users on these consoles. The company will continue to provide online maintenance and security services for both consoles. For physical defects though, that’s up to owners and enthusiasts to solve themselves. Users will still be able to access online multiplayer functionality for certain games. In summary, while the closure of the WiiU and 3Ds Eshops is undoubtedly disappointing for some users, it reflects Nintendo’s ongoing efforts to consolidate its digital offerings and prioritize the Switch platform. Nonetheless, Nintendo has assured users that they will still be able to enjoy their previously purchased content on the WiiU and 3Ds consoles.
